Ladderback Jacquard

Ladderback Jacquard (LBJ) is a technique used in stranded colorwork (like Fair Isle) to manage long stretches of unused yarn on the back of the work. Instead of trapping floats into existing stitches, it creates an invisible column of "ladder" stitches on the wrong side that holds the floating yarn. We will learn how to do this technique as we knit a little swatch, and we will chat about how to insert this technique into other colorwork patterns and talk about color dominance in colorwork.

If you have a colorwork pattern that you would like assistance with where to start and stop LBJ, please bring the pattern with you. We will also practice on a pattern I have that is more difficult than our class project!

Materials: 2 colors DK weight yarn at least 10g of each color - scraps work great (HIGH CONTRAST), US5 knitting needles used for small circumference (9” circ, 32” for magic loop or double pointed needles).

Homework: Using 1 of your colors, CO42. Join your work to work in the round and K1, P1 for 4 rounds. Knit one round. Bring your work with you to class, including your second color.
