A History Lesson

Since we opened in 2016 I have heard a few stories about businesses that have called 218 E. Main Street home. I decided to poke around on the internet and discover what the truth was!

At first the search was slow going. Of course I found recent history of A Little Knitty, Liberty Jane and Love Travel...but I knew these already! Finally I remembered that the White River Valley Museum had online archives of I headed over there to see what I could find.

This is the first photo I stumbled across, which is a photo that was taken in front of where the lighting store currently resides, and looks down main street towards the shop. This was the closest I could find when searching our address.

Next, I remembered a story that someone told me this was once a Ford dealership...and THAT is when I found it...the photo that showed the front of the building that was NO DOUBT our shop! And the museum noted that this lighter colored building was what we now know as 222 E. Main Street. The archway that is on the left is the Allstate business now, the building was at some point split and the arcade at 222 E. Main Street was created. The archway on the right is our shop!

Yup, in the 1920's this building was INDEED a Ford Dealership! Through this search I found "Fairchild Motor Company" so I searched for that term and found this photo...which was dated the early 1920s!

And then this photo was uncovered...the ONLY interior photo I could find

I climb those stairs every day!!!!!!

Unfortunately this is where my search ended. I couldn't figure out what came after the ford dealership (I believe it was there through the 20's but after that I have no clue). I found some pics of Main Street in the 60's and 70's but none of them included our storefront. I have heard it was a child's clothing boutique and a quilt shop, so I searched for both of those. Nothing came up on the children's clothing boutique...but I did discover the quilt shop....

....was next door! I always thought this space had great crafting vibes passed down from the quilt shop, but indeed I was wrong! ;)

In the 1990's our space was Love Travel and stayed that way until 2014 when Liberty Jane took over the space.

It was so fun to look at old photos of Auburn, learn more about the history of the city and see the many evolutions of Downtown...I'm excited to be part of the next evolution!

Thank you, White River Valley Museum for your amazing archive!!!

New Classes Have Arrived

We are SO excited to hear how much you are loving the classes and want more! So for the spring/summer we will be bringing back the Thursday evening classes! If you have any questions, please email us at
Happy Knitting (and Crocheting!!!)

Learn to Crochet - Crocheted Fingerless Mitts - $30 – 3 hours – Instructor: Sandy Buzzelli

Date Available:         Thursday, April 5th - 6pm to 9pm

Working with just one hook and one stitch at a time, crochet is fun and easy to learn. In this class, we’ll explore several basic crochet stitches -- chain, slip stitch, single crochet, and half double crochet. We’ll learn to read crochet patterns and gain an understanding of how to keep row edges neat and straight. Our class project will be a pair of stylish fingerless mitts.

Casting On and Binding Off - $35 – 4 hours – Instructor: Sandy Buzzelli

Date Available:         Saturday, April 7th 10am to 2pm

The look and fit of our knitted items is greatly influenced by the cast on and bind off methods we choose. If we need stretch for the cuff of a sock, we might choose one of several variations of the long tail cast on for cuff-down socks or the suspended bind off for toe-up socks. For a beautiful finish on a ribbed collar, we might choose the tubular cast on/bind off. If we are binding off after knitting garter stitch, we might use the sewn bind off.

We’ll explore these and many more ways to get stitches on and off our needles (crochet cast on and bind off, Emily Ocker's cast on, 3-needle bind off, I-cord bind off), and we’ll come away with a general understanding of when and how to use each method.

As an added bonus, we’ll also discuss how to deal with two pesky issues that crop up when binding off: that loose last stitch when doing the traditional bind off and the jog that happens when binding off in circular knitting.    Prerequisite: you should know how to cast on, knit, purl, and bind off.

While there are many ways to add colors and motifs to your knitting – intarsia, color stranding, and mosaic knitting, to name a few – double-knitting might just be the most intriguing of all.

Double-knitting creates a two-color, double-layered fabric that is knit all at one time and is also completely reversible.

In this class, we’ll knit the School Spirit Headband so you can cheer on your favorite team in true double-knit style!

Successful blocking brings out the very best in our knitted/crocheted projects -- it brings the fiber to life, ensures a comfortable fit, and makes the stitch patterns pop! In this class, we'll explore why we block and how to block by working with actual projects provided by both the instructor and YOU! We'll see demonstrations on wet blocking, steam blocking, blocking lace and cables, blocking hats and sweaters, how to use blocking wires and blocking boards, and so much more!

Two-at-a-Time Toe-Up Socks – This is a Two Part Class - $40 – 5 Hours – Instructor: Sandy Buzzelli

Please note, this is a two part class!

If you’re a sock knitter, you might have suffered from one-sock-itis (aka one-sock syndrome), that dreaded lack of desire to start, much less finish, the second sock of a pair.

Despair not, because we have the cure – knit both socks at the very same time! You’re guaranteed to have two socks by the time you’re done, and both socks will be exactly the same – no more trying to remember what you did on the first sock. We’ll be knitting our pair of socks from the toe to the cuff – making it easy to get a good fit, and we won’t have to worry about running out of yarn on the second sock.

Whether you knit your socks using the Magic Loop or two circular needles, you can learn to knit two socks at the same time.

Prerequisite: you should know how to knit one sock at a time, cuff down or toe up.

New Year, New Website
January 8, 2018

We are giving our website and online store a little make over...and some exciting things will come with it! Starting next week, we will have a new look and feel for the website, hopefully streamlining your experience on all platforms (our old solution just would not work on Internet Explorer, and a lot of people use that wasn't working for us!) If you have any problems with our new online presence, please email us at

In February we will launch a full online store. This means that most of our inventory will be available online!! This is VERY exciting for us! We won't list anything that is consigned, a promotional or short time item or super large/funny shapped items....all of those will only be available in our shop on Main Street only!

Thank you so much for checking out A Little Knitty!
